Sandra Hanson, Ph.D.

Professor, Department of Sociology

I am from Minneapolis, Minnesota and received my Ph.D. in Sociology at Pennsylvania State University. I was a Fulbright Scholar at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. In my recent book, SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE: AFRICAN AMERICAN GIRLS IN SCIENCE EDUCATION, I explore the role of race and gender in science education. One of the challenges for me in my graduate education was getting other graduate students to speak up against a graduate director who was harassing female students and staff. I had many people who mentored me along the way but one of the most memorable situations involved a Professor of Sociology who encouraged me to get a graduate minor in Statistics and seemed to assume that this would be no problem for me (I had never considered it). In terms of my leisure time, I enjoy reading, hiking, canoeing, biking and almost any outdoor/sport activity.
